1 April 2025 Hort Award Transition from Level 1 to Level 2
Date: 10th April 2025
Effective from April 1, 2025, significant changes have been implemented to the Horticulture Award concerning entry-level classifications. As an employer in the horticulture industry, it’s crucial to understand these updates to ensure compliance and proper compensation for your employees.
Key Changes:
-
Time Limit on Level 1 Classification: Employees can now only be classified as Level 1 for a maximum of three months. This period allows new workers to acquire the basic skills and experience required in the horticulture industry. After this duration, employees should progress to a higher classification level. Notably, any prior experience in the horticulture sector counts towards this three-month period.
-
Updated Indicative Tasks for Level 2 Employees: The award now includes new indicative tasks for Level 2 employees, providing clearer guidance on the responsibilities and expectations at this classification.
Under the Horticulture Award, “industry experience” encompasses any prior experience within the horticulture sector, irrespective of the specific crops handled or tasks performed. This means that experience gained with different crops or in varying roles still contributes to the three-month industry experience period required for progression from Level 1 to Level 2 classification. The Fair Work Ombudsman clarifies that industry experience is not confined to a single task, crop, or employer.
