Wamuran Irrigation Scheme Proves Recycled Water is Safe, Sustainable and Supports Australian Agriculture

Date: 4 April 2025

Wamuran, QLD – The Wamuran Irrigation Scheme, located just north of Brisbane, is setting a benchmark for sustainability in Australian agriculture, using high-quality Class A recycled water to support the production of fresh fruit and vegetables without posing any health risk.

Recent coverage by the ABC has highlighted the innovative use of recycled water from the Queensland Urban Utilities’ Caboolture South treatment plant, which undergoes rigorous purification before being delivered to farms in the Wamuran region. The water used in this scheme meets the strictest government safety standards and is classified as Class A — the highest quality available for recycled water use.

Independent testing and compliance with Queensland Health and national guidelines ensure that the water poses absolutely no health risk when used for the irrigation of agricultural crops. The Class A standard guarantees the water is treated through multiple stages of filtration and disinfection, including ultra-filtration, reverse osmosis, and advanced oxidation processes, removing pathogens and other contaminants to levels well below regulatory limits.

This is one of the most advanced recycled water schemes in Australia,” said a spokesperson for the project.

Farmers can be absolutely confident that the water is safe for crop production, and consumers can trust the food produced is clean, safe and sustainable.”

The Wamuran Irrigation Scheme is a shining example of circular economy thinking — where treated wastewater is no longer seen as a burden, but as a valuable resource. This approach not only reduces reliance on rainfall and traditional freshwater sources but also supports the resilience and productivity of Queensland’s agricultural sector.

The system currently supports several major fruit and vegetable growers in the region, supplying crops such as strawberries, pineapples, and avocados. These products continue to meet stringent food safety standards and reach consumers across Australia and abroad.

Delivery of the complex Wamuran Irrigation Scheme project was recognised in 2024 at the Australian Institute of Project Management’s Queensland Project Management Achievement Awards, winning sustainable project of the year for Queensland.

By embracing innovation and prioritising safety, the Wamuran Irrigation Scheme demonstrates that recycled water is not only safe and sustainable, but vital to the future of Australian farming.
