Probiotics to Help Pollinators Be the Best They Can ‘Bee’

Researchers at Macquarie University are developing probiotic treatments to boost honeybee health and improve pollination services. Using natural gut bacteria, they aim to combat common brood diseases like chalkbrood and foulbrood. Initial trials show that native probiotic mixes enhance brood survival, while non-native probiotics may reduce it. Ongoing studies will test pathogen resistance and cognitive benefits, as improved gut health could enhance bee learning and navigation, leading to better pollination efficiency. Field trials continue into 2025, with potential benefits for both bee populations and agricultural productivity.
